What is The Shift Colors Project?

We help veterans and their families adjust to civilian life together through extensive guidance, education, and shared experiences.

What does Shift Colors mean?

When a United States Naval vessel sets sail, the personnel move (shift) the flag (colors) to signify that the ship is underway. The flag is returned when the ship is once again anchored or alongside a pier.

So why Shift Colors?

When a United States veteran departs the military, in many cases they are leaving an environment of constant change. When that veteran has a family, the family members are understandably excited to have more time with their veteran.

This new environment can be much more difficult than either the veteran or the family expect. The Shift Colors Project helps the veteran learn to manage their need for change. We do so by helping them learn to include their family members in shared experiences outside of their new everyday civilian life. We also work with the family members to better understand that their veteran does actually need more change in their routine than what the family may be accustomed to.

One of the ways we do both is by sending the veteran and their family on outings, even vacations, while guiding them through the pitfalls they will encounter along the way.

The veteran will "Shift Colors" when they travel by focusing on their family and their own personal needs. Returning home, we help the veteran to "Shift Colors" toward a focus on their professional needs. This can mean working on resumes, interview skills, or even help working with the VA.

The Shift Colors Project is actively seeking connections with other community organizations that are able to provide additional assistance to our veterans and their families. Fundraising will begin soon; any opportunities in this area will also be welcome.
